The Renaissance period was characterized by the flourishing of all forms of art and literature, which had previously been under strict control of the church. The Renaissance also marked the beginning of modern science. The advent of Humanistic thought set Europeans to thinking that perhaps they were not merely destined to be what their social status dictated. They began to find that man was capable of accomplishing many things not previously done.

One extremely significant influence was, in fact, the Crusades of the Dark Ages, which occurred between the 11th and 13th centuries. Throughout the the The ideals of ancient Rome and Greece were re-evaluated, including their philosophies of life, reality, and the way people learn.
