"Crop" an Image Tutorial

Adobe Photoshop

Objective: To resize an image by using the "crop" tool -

Introduction: Photoshop comes with a variety of different tools to alter and adjust images. The crop tool is useful in resizing and rotating an image. Photoshop actually provides two ways to crop an image: 1) The Image > Crop command discards the area outside of a rectangular selection and keeps the same resolution as the original; 2) The crop tool lets you crop an image by dragging over the area you want to keep. The advantage of using the crop tool is that you can rotate and resample the area as you crop.

Skill Practice: To Crop an Image Using the "Crop Tool"

Step 1: Open and click on File > New. A window titled "New" will appear on your screen.

Step 2: On the "New" window, specify desired image properties (width, height, resolution, mode, etc.), then click OK.

Step 3: Click on File > Open to open (import) an image from a saved location (from floppy disk, "C" drive, CD, etc). Find an image file you want to work with, then click OK. The image will now appear on the screen.

Step 4: To locate the crop tool, click and "hold" on the Marquee Tool button (top left button on vertical tool bar) - a small image-editing toolbar will appear. Move cursor to Crop Tool icon , then release the mouse button.

Step 5: Using the crop tool, "click and drag" the cursor over the part of the image you want to keep.

Step 6: When you release the mouse button, a box with "sizing handles" appears. If desired, use the "sizing handles" to rotate and scale your image.

Step 7: When you have the "sizing handles" in the desired position, press enter (PC) or return (Mac) to make desired cropping adjustments to the image. Notice that any image area outside of the "sizing handles" is immediately eliminated. If satisfied, click on File > Save to save image with cropping adjustments. If not satisfied, click on Edit > Undo Crop to reverse the cropping adjustments. The original image will reappear.
