Create "Topic Web" Tutorial
Inspiration
Objective: To Create a "Topic Web"
Introduction: "Topic webs" can be a useful and easy way to organize and present educational information to students. Inspiration is a software program that allows you to create "topic webs", and save them as image files for use on web pages and handouts.
Skill Practice: Creating a "topic web" using Inspiration 6.0
Step 1: Open
. "Click-and-Hold" on the
box. "Drag", or move, the box to a desired location on screen.
Step 2: Once the Main Idea box is where you want it, you can change it's shape by "clicking" on it, and then clicking on a shape or image from one of the many symbol palettes. Go to View > Symbol Palette to view the symbol palettes. The size of the box can be changed by clicking on it and dragging one of the sizing handles to the desired dimension.
Step 3: To add a new box or image, move the cursor to the desired location and click. A "cross" will appear
. Select the new image from one of the symbol palettes. It will appear in place of the "cross". Try a new shape for the first part of the web.
Step 4: To add text in a new box, "double" click on the box. A white background will appear, along with a cursor
. Add the desired text. You can edit the font type, size, and style by going to Format on the top toolbar and using the available options.
Step 5: Arrow "links" can be added by: 1) clicking on the box that the arrow will start from, 2) "click-and-dragging" on one of the "diamond" shapes that appears with the "sizing handles", and 3) dragging the line to the box you want the arrow to point (or link) to. To edit the "arrow", "click" on the arrow, go to Effect on the top toolbar, and use the available edit options, such as "line thickness", "line pattern", and "line color".
Step 6:
After adding the boxes and arrows from your sub-idea, you can copy it and paste it for your successive sub-ideas. Move the cursor so you can draw a box around the entire area you want to copy. Click and hold the cursor until you can drag a box around it. Go to Edit > Copy to copy the box or image. Move the cursor to the desired location, and click the mouse button. The
will appear. Go to Edit > Paste. The copied box, or image, will appear in the desired location.
Step 7:
"Spice" up your "topic web" by adding graphics from the symbol palette, and changing background colors or line colors. Insert graphics just like you would a new box from step 3. Change background or line colors by clicking on the line you desire to change (you can do this before you make any lines as well). Once highlighted, go to the top of the screen and click on Effects, then scroll to line or background color. Simply click on the color you want and it will change.
