Objective: To password-protect an Excel file



Introduction: Microsoft Excel is equipped with a password-protect option that allows educators to protect the contect of an Excel file. By creating a password for an Excel file, an educator can feel comfortable with sharing the file without being concerned about content manipulation by unauthorized users.



Skill Practice: To password-protect an Excel file

Step 1: Open . Go to File > Open - the "Open" window will appear on screen. Open an Excel file that you want to attach the password-protect option to.

Step 2: With the Excel file opened, use the top toolbar and go to Tool > Protection. A small window will appear on screen that will allow the user to a) protect the sheet, b) protect the workbook, or c) protect and share the workbook.

Step 3: If you selected Protect Sheet, the "Protect Sheet" window will appear on screen, with options to protect objects, contents, and scenarios in the sheet.



Type in a desired password, and then select . The "confirm password" window will appear on screen. Type in the password again, and then select .


Step 4: If you selected Protect Worksheet, the "Protect Workbook" window will appear on screen, with options to protect structure and windows.



Type in a desired password, and then select . The "confirm password" window will appear on screen. Type in the password again, and then select .


Step 5: If you selected Protect and Share Workbook, the "Protect Shared Workbook" window will appear on screen, with options to track changes.



Select the "Sharing with Track Changes" box, type in a desired password, and then select . The "confirm password" window will appear on screen. Type in the password again, and then select .


Step 6: Password to Open Spreadsheet: Go to File > Save. The Save As window will appear on screen.



Select , and select "General Options". The "Save Option" window will appear on screen



Select the "always create backup" and "read-only recommended" options, and then type in a password to open the document, and a password to modify the document. Select when finished.
